There is something in your direct experience right now that has always felt the same. You have always felt this feeling that is unchanging. You always feel like you, even as emotions change, thoughts change, experiences change, the environment changes, perspectives change, ideas change, beliefs change, the body changes. Yet the feeling of what is "seeing out those eyes" or "behind those eyes", there is this source that knows itself and has always known itself as this untouched feeling of me. That feeling is unchanging and always present, you feel like you and you have felt that from the day you were born and as far back as you can remember because who you really are is unchanging even as everything else appears to change. The "inner feeling of me" is always the same.
However, that unborn feeling of me that is eternally unchanging and always-present, that unique sense of me, that unmistakable meness; is not significant to you. Anybody can sense that unmoving sense of meness because it is direct and obvious. You have always felt like you.
Yet everybody in the world has that same exact sense of me, it is no different, it is EXACTLY, not even the slightest of difference. Everybody's "inner sense of me" is equally the exact same because there is only one me and it is nowhere particular. It is not this body/mind or that body/mind, it is every body/mind and everything else too because there is nothing else. Perhaps only living beings (humans, animals, insects, etc...) have an "inner sense of me" but that "inner sense of me" can be seen in everyone and everything rather living or not.
Try this: Walk into a very familiar room, where you are familiar with everything in that room. Look slowly at everything in the room and see if you can notice that "inner feeling of me" by looking at the things in the room.
The mind will tell you that these things are familiar because you have seen these things before. This is the conditioning of the mind as a belief. See for yourself and see if that is really it or are these things familiar because you are seeing that "inner sense of me" in the "outer"? You might even start to notice that this "familiar sense of me" can be seen in people/things that you have never seen before.
That "inner sense of me" is seen stronger in some people/things and weaker in other people/things (for no reason or why, try not to figure it out because it means nothing), and sometimes it's not seen at all.
Yet, the "familiar sense of me" rather seen in the "outer" or not, doesn't matter. It's not about a certain state/experience or anything to do with appearances of familiar or unfamiliar things. The appearances are you too but not because they matter, what "matters" is that the "inner sense of me" is unchanging, always present, and that is what everybody is searching to find. To find the unchanging, so that the appearances of change will not be as serious or fearful.
Yet there is nothing to find because you're always there. Any feeling of "something is not right" is because that unchanging and always present you (that inner feeling of self) is being overlooked. You are the unchanging witness of all changing appearances. What would you as the unchangeable need? Why would you need certain appearances to appear and other appearances to disappear? It's all appearances no matter what is disappearing or appearing. Every change is an appearance and everything will change eventually. What notices every change? That "inner sense of me" notices it. The timeless unchanging "inner sense of me" is unharmed or unaffected by any appearance. You will always feel like you and know you no matter what. It's not a intellectual knowing, it is a knowing that knows without reason, why, how, or logic.
What you are needs no experiences, state, or a certain appearance to arise in order to be what you are. You don't need an "enlightened" experience, whatever that is, if you have an idea of what that is, then you are only chasing an appearance of that idea. All experiences, states, and ideas are changing appearances.
What is being pointed out here is that this "inner sense of me" is unchanging and always present because it is timeless. If you can recognize that "inner sense of me" in yourself; that is it. Simple, obvious, and direct. That is it! That is all enlightenment is about. Yes it is that simple. There is nowhere to go and nothing to do because you are already this unchanging perfection.
